Of course the sperm and ova are genetically unique: they have the genetic uniqueness of the father (sperm) and the mother (ova). I really can’t believe we are having this discussion.

Sperm and ova are each genetically unique. In fact, their sole function is to convey the genes of the mother (ova) and the genes of the father (sperm). And that is how the ova, fertilised by the sperm, get to carry the genes of both.

A fertilised egg is not alive as a “separate, genetically unique individual”. It is part and parcel of the mother’s body.

Please stop repeating the mantra that abortion is only limited to the termination of pregnancy .
Early term abortion also includes the prevention of implantation of a fertilized egg .

Yes, Spock, they are alive. The ova are alive and the sperm are alive. I think I need to point you back to the first lesson children get taught in science: the classification of things into three categories called DEAD, ALIVE and NEVER ALIVE.

Sperm and ova fall into either the first or the second category. When sperm and ova are DEAD, that individual is infertile.

Oh good grief – sperm and ova are both alive, Spock. If they were not, fertilisation wouldn’t be possible. ‘Life’ does not equate with ‘person’.

In reply to Spock. Life? Your biology books will tell you that those ova and sperm are alive even before they meet and fertilise - as otherwise, they wouldn't be able to meet and fertilise.
