The then president of the European Commission, Jacques Delors, had called for the European Parliament to be the democratic body of the community, the Commission to be the executive and the Council of Ministers to be the senate.

The EU parliament, the only democratic institution in the EU’s political structure, has been rendered meaningless by the hubristic European Council’s dictatorial decision to overrule the EU parliament’s vote for an outright and clear refusal of Malta’s candidate for the EU’s Court of Auditors.

For me this has been a great shock. I cannot interpret the Council’s decision other than a serious blow to the EU’s democratic values and therefore its future.

I expect that the European Parliament moves a motion of no confidence in the council. It cannot take this blow sitting down.
