There is nothing left in Dubai of all the little fishermen’s abodes by the water that existed pre ’99. All there is is a homogenous mass of concrete, whichever the differentiators intended. The only flavour left in Dubai is in the Indian and poorer quarters.

One does get fed-up of five and seven star – totally boringly alike -and one does search for the authentic when that happens.

Other Banana Republics have meanwhile positioned relatively harmless figures such as Anthony de Niro as envoys. The market does what the market wants.

Why in all of this and the LNG tanker scandal are we only pointing fingers at the Government. Who’s to say the plans were not hatched by the businessmen involved? Afterall I ain’t seeing a lot of genius coming out of the Labour gang. Some people involved are getting off very lightly it seems.

The inspiration is not so much the buildings, but the money that will pour into secret Panama-based companies in approving projects, awarding contracts, and enticing dubious characters to contribute to all this.

In reply to Anna Cassar. And as far as I am aware these spaces cannot be purchased, but only leased. The building owner retains full responsibility of the building and its infrastructure and maintenance. By selling units (common practice in Malta), the ownership is fragmented and building maintenance becomes uncontrollable.

In reply to rita schembri. Not even the millions upon millions held by corrupt politicians and other criminals hidden away from the rightful authorities. Probably these are in safe keeping deep down in the vaults under the skyscrapers themselves.
