Because Hillary Clinton’s campaign guru was the shadow partner in an obscure company trafficking in Russian uranium. It is still not clear who the final recipient would have been.

Putin simply couldn’t trust Hillary Clinton.

As for her enthusiasm to engage Russia in Syria, it was the military which pointed out to congress that there was no plausible advantage. Nor was any general going to trust her judgement or integrity to take on the supreme role of commander in chief.

The disparaging manner she brushed off any responsibility for having abandoned an ambassador and three agents to face their killers alone in Benghazi was something to take in.

Hillary Clinton did the worst thing she could, betray her own men and be flippant about it.

Angela Merkel is now de facto the moral leader of the free democratic world (unfortunately a shrinking world). She should be appointed the next President of the European Council. She is the only politician with the clout to modernise, democratise and unite the last bulwark of liberal democracy in the world.

Vladimir Putin has out-manoeuvred Barak Obama all along, getting what he wants, at the cost of travel and/or economic sanctions against him and his close collaborators. All he needs now is for an easing of these sanctions? Will Donald Trump cooperate? We will have to wait and see.

Russia is much more dangerous than the “terrorist gangs in Syria”. It has exactly the same complete disregard for human life, rights and dignity. But it wields a massive nuclear armamentarium.

The USA and Western Europe did not win the Cold War and defeat the home-grown terrorist groups, by working with the USSR, but by undermining it at every opportunity and letting it self destruct.

Russia is a fascist, terrorist state. Any country which works with it would be colluding with fascism.

I think the reason why these ‘leaders’ like each other is because they can now do what they like with impunity because no one is going to disapprove.

I also think that Europe is the last bastion of liberalism, and a target in Russia’s eyes. Europe and Canada vs US/UK/Russia. I believe that is now the new lay of the land.

Hollande’s and Martin Schultz’s reactions have not been very complimentary, to say the least. They smell of caution and admonition.

Putin seems to be all agog about Trump’s success. One may, however, remember that for the last few weeks, Trump has been trumpeting that the presidential election was rigged and that the Russians would be hacking the voting electronics. It does not appear that this has raised Putin’s hackles at all.

Whether America’s NATO allies feel very comfortable with the situation has still to be seen.
