At last somebody besides Daphne has woken up and smelled the aroma and stench of power and greed surrounding the privatisation of Malta’s healthcare services.

Having worked on these privately financed healthcare projects in the UK, known as private finance initiatives (PFI), the fact is that these greedy private sector consortiums are only in it for the profit they can make.

Currently, the UK has more than 100 legally binding, privately financed hospital trusts. The total UK debt is now over £300 billion for projects worth only £55 billion.

This means that nearly £250 billion will have been spent on swelling the coffers of these private sector consortiums. These private partnership projects have destroyed the UK’s public healthcare services.

The projects effectively work like a mortgage, with repayments being made on the construction and facilities management services over 30+ years. The snag is that the interest rates charged by the private consortiums are scandalously high.

Many of the trusts are now in debt to the tune of millions and some have been placed into ‘financial special measures’ by the government. Because of its alarmingly high cash crisis, this includes Barts, which is currently in debt to the tune of £193 million. This is the largest debt in the history of the UK National Health Service.

So it is no wonder that the silence from the Maltese government, Barts, Vitals ‘Global Healthcare’ and Partners Health International is absolutely deafening.
