Because that kind of sentiment is pointless patriotism that leads in turn to the rise of the right. Look at how those who are ‘proud to be British’ are viewed – with contempt, as in the most prominent exemplar, Nigel Farage.

If he has any self-respect or at least respect for his constitutional role, he should stop brown-nosing the Prime Minister. But then, if he had any of those, he would have resigned as soon as he was rejected by the European Court of Justice.
