I was unable to post comments for a few days, so I did not write anything about this news item before.

I think that I was the first to refer to this legal challenge that was being taken against the way the UK government planned to implement the referendum outcome on the UK exit from the EU, and I refrained from passing any (useless) further comments until the courts declared themselves.

Now it is time to talk.

It is not true, at all, that the UK judges are challenging, in any way, the outcome of the referendum. That is a distortion of the truth, and I am surprised that UK newspapers of a good international reputation are going along with this misrepresentation.

The judges are telling the government led by Prime Minister Theresa May, in brief, "you are going the wrong way to implement the outcome of the referendum which you are accepting".

And disgustingly, Theresa May has refused to say anything about this sort of attitude, saying she believes in the freedom of the press.

She is being disingenuous. This is not about press freedom, but about the press inciting mob hatred and violence, or worse, to intimidate the judiciary and undermine its independence.

The fascist press has been inciting Europhobia and feeding lies about the EU to a gullible British public for years. They have brought Brexit about. And now May needs them to help her give a positive spin to the Titanic mess that Brexit will cause.

It is a shame that someone who holds democracy and the rule of law in such a low regard should be the heir of the likes of William Pitt, Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher.

An election or a referendum overturns the result of the previous vote. The Brexit vote is not writ in stone.

The British vote to leave the EU was essentially a blind vote. No one knew what the terms of departure would be.

The Leave campaign had implied that the UK would be able to retain free access to the European Single Market because the Germans and the French wanted to keep selling cars and wine respectively to the British while according to Boris Johnson European consumers wanted to keep on buying UK made "French knickers".

Now that the EU has made it clear that out really means out, and a soft Brexit is an impossible illusion, even Brexiteers are alarmed. Liam Fox has complained that the EU's hard stance is putting political considerations above economic prosperity. Well, that's what Brexit was all about.

The hijacking of the Brexit project by the loony, fundamentalist europhobes like John Redwood, Iain Duncan Smith, David Davis and Liam Fox, and their determination not to involve parliament in the negotiations and keep MPs completely in the dark, is alarming even to Tory backbenchers.

Moreover, a vote that will deprive people of the fundamental rights they enjoy as European citizens and which disregards the rights and wishes of the Scottish and Irish minorities in the UK can never be termed democratic, irrespective of the level of support it attracts.

The UK is not the oldest democracy in the world; that honour goes to Athens in the 5th century BC which had a system of direct democracy where the people voted directly on many state matters. England, however, might be the oldest representative democracy (rule by the people through its representatives in Parliament). In other words 'democracy in action' in the UK means that triggering article 50 of the TEU requires a vote in Parliament.

It doesn"t work like that, you know. There are no trial periods.

I imagine you are one of those people who think it''s just like joining or leaving a club, and who have no idea of the massive amount of structural and legislation change involved.

Malta did not spend a trial period as an EU member before deciding whether to join. It joined, fullstop.

Oh, and another thing - Malta's referendum vote was based on the full negotiated terms of membership. Britain''s vote to leave was not taken on the full negotiated terms of departure.

That's because you do not understand human nature, or like many here, have a view that everything overseas is politically correct, polite, and superior to anything in Malta. Or you believe in the 'only in Malta' tales.
