No need for the government to do any forcing. The Institute of Maltese Journalists itself agitated to introduce a ‘warrant’ for journalists, missing the ‘wood’ of freedom of the press for the ‘trees’ of professional status.

Journalists should never let the government have the mechanism to bar them from exercising their profession by means of a warrant that can be withdrawn, let alone the Institute voluntarily giving such means to any government.

The Nationalist government did that already: it instituted a system of state-issued ‘press cards’, released only on approval by the Department of Information, which are required to cover any press conference or event related to government ministries or the government in general.

I’ve argued against it until I’m blue in the face. This is a country where everybody carries a state-issued identity card anywhere, which is sufficient security-clearance to let somebody into a building.

He can also lecture us on how police constables should behave when there is a legitimate mass rally in the whereabouts of tal-Barrani.

He should also lecture us on milking the system, attending full time law course whilst receiving full salary as a police officer. That was nice seeing him being chauffeured to and from university on a daily basis whilst the rest of us used tal-linja and made do with a stipend.
