It is not even remotely possible for an educated person (and even many uneducated ones) not to know the expression ‘quo vadis’, how to spell it, and what it means.

The reality is that my Maltese is far better than theirs (because theirs is working-class Maltese and mine is not, and it’s the same difference between working-class English and proper English) and it sticks in their craw that I’m actually bilingual and they’re barely monolingual.

Quo vadis? (Classical Latin: [kʷoː waːdis], Ecclesiastical Latin: [kʷoː vadiːs]) is a Latin phrase meaning “Where are you going?”

The modern usage of the phrase refers to a Christian tradition regarding Saint Peter. According to the apocryphal Acts of Peter (Vercelli Acts XXXV[1]), Peter is fleeing from likely crucifixiondown.[2] The Church of Domine Quo Vadis in Rome is built where, according to legend, the meeting between Peter and Jesus took place.
