Or maybe they’ve taken him to a psychiatrist and got him a prescription for lithium. But I think the more likely explanation is that he is currently not manic. Those periods when he’s going nuts all over the comments boards and twitching and jerking all over your television screen? Those are manic episodes.

Some years ago we were having a meal at a small Indian restaurant when in walks this other couple – he in a suit with his mobile phone glued to his ear (it stayed there permanently) and she with frizzy or curly hair. Although it was towards the beginning of his notoriety, I recognized him immediately.

For the two hours they were there, he barely sat in his chair. He paced up and down, in and out of the restaurant yelling into his phone. He wanted the door open, he wanted the door closed. He wanted the air conditioner turned up, then he wanted it turned down.

Eventually they left. Never a word was exchanged between Franco and his luckless companion in all the time they were there.
