Salvu Mallia's threat is not to the other candidates and the persona of the traditional Nationalist candidate, but to the stability of the party.

His language is not the issue, as many seem to think. It is the mindset behind the language that should be of concern to anyone who has the future of the Party and its future prospects of forming a successful government at heart.

And the language Salvu Mallia uses reinforces his openly-declared stance that toeing the party line is not something that he considers as one of the tenets of being a member of a political party.

So, after Dr Gonzi's experience of finding himself the victim of blackmail by someone who initially appeared to be a promising candidate but then his underlying narcissistic tendencies came to the surface when he realised that he is not being given what he had been dreaming of since he was a schoolboy, now we have someone who is openly declaring that his opinions trump all others', and despite Debono's rendering all prospects of the PN's re-election from near-zero to certain non-existent still fresh in our minds as the early morning dew, we want to take Mallia on board?

In Debono's case, we can all be excused because nobody could have suspected anything, but Mallia is ACTUALLY MAKING IT CRYSTAL CLEAR that his idea of a political party is a very loose one - if anyone missed the clear declaration that he does not consider himself obliged in any way to go along with decisions by the Leader or Party Executive, he is constantly reminding us through his very telling language that he actually uses.

This is sheer madness!

Yes, I see where you're coming from on this, and in an ideal situation I too would prefer to have a parliament made up of people who think exactly as I do and who come from exactly the same background so that I can relate them.

But it's not going to happen. And it shouldn't happen.

You want the impossible. You want a return to the days when a working-class docker voted for Winston Churchill because he was superior and bound to know better.

That way of thinking ended a long, long time ago. People no longer vote for 'their superiors', but for their equals, for those who are like them.

That is, in fact, one of the main problems my kind of person - and I speak for many, many people I know here - has with the ballot-sheet. There is nobody on it to whom we can relate.

MPs are by very definition the representatives of the people. Just as we are judged by a jury of our peers, so we are represented in parliament by our peers.

Parliaments all over the world are filled with people who represent a mix of the population.

Not all backbenchers become members of the cabinet of government. That's exactly why there are backbenchers - and yes, somebody like Salvu Mallia is actually ideal to speak in parliament.

What special skills does Chris Cardona have to be a minister? A drunken bar-hopper shouldn't even be a member of parliament. Salvu Mallia doesn't hang out at Hugo's Lounge with a variety of imported tarts in the early hours of the morning, half- or completely drunk.

Again the reasoning is completely wrong (and this isn't a reference to you). If a Franco Debono is going to emerge, it had best be now, in good enough time to get rid of him.

People like Franco Debono are not caused by events or unfairness. They are that way already and the sooner events and unfairness reveal their psychiatric problems, the better.

In reply to <a href="https://daphnecaruanagalizia.com/2016/12/salvu-mallia-speaks-people-let-speak/#comment-3112155">Jane Duncan</a>.

Totally foggy thinking: the Nationalist Party is not there to serve its candidates, but the other way round: its candidates are there to serve its purposes. If they do not wish to serve its purposes, they can stand for election as independent candidates.

And the Nationalist Party is not in the business of ensuring that its candidates are equally treated, because its candidates are not equal but more crucially, because its primary business is not internal equality but external communication for the purpose of winning a general election.

In sum: if David Thake is putting on a show that thousands of people listen to every day and LIKE AND ENJOY AND UNDERSTAND, then he should not only carry on but be actively encouraged to do so by all his colleagues, and those who think it is unfair can, quite frankly, go and fcuk themselves.

In fact, a situation like this is just what the Nationalist Party needs to identify and weed out the people who really don't understand what team spirit is and what the objectives are.

If a PN candidate can't understand that the objective her is not to get himself or herself elected to parliament but to get the Nationalist Party elected to government, then he should be got rid of immediately.

I speak as a voter and a citizen when I say that I am sick to the back-teeth of looking at a ballot sheet full of rubbish names of people with whom I have nothing in common and who I wouldn't trust to clean my backyard. And I am sick to the death of being told by the political party which expects me to vote for it whether I can or can't listen to David Thake at drive-time. I speak for crowds of angry people when I say that I WANT to listen to David Thake at drive-time and I don't want to listen to other people because I can't relate to them.
