Estate agents will sell more flats and ‘properties’, and Sandro Chetcuti and his friends will use the artificial demand to get more permits to build on new development zones and knock down more old houses for skyscrapers. And lawyers and accountants and ‘financial intermediaries’ will sell more passports and residence visas and in turn create more artificial demand for rented flats, forcing rent rates into the stratosphere and pricing Maltese people out of the market. But as long as the financial intermediaries, lawyers, accountants, estate agents and developers are making money, that’s a silver lining – or so we’re told.
