Allowing myself to temporarily set aside the original context in which Oscar Wilde wrote his famous poem “The Ballad of Reading Gaol” and concentrating on the literal meaning of the words, I am reminded of the lines:

“Yet each man kills the thing he loves,
By each let this be heard,
Some do it with a bitter look,
Some with a flattering word,
The coward does it with a kiss,
The brave man with a sword!”

I hope that this case and others like it will be dealt with if the Nationalist Party wins the election. It’s about bloody time that the tangled web of criminality and corruption that has been festering in this country is finally exposed, and its perpetrators named, shamed and brought to justice – even if the story goes back 50 years in some cases.

The greatest failure of 25 years of almost continuous Nationalist government was the perhaps admirable but definitely ill-conceived policy of ‘forgiving and forgetting’ all but the most heinous of crimes for the sake of national reconciliation.

All that resulted from that was that this criminal virus grew even deeper roots, spread and became more entrenched in an environment which was not at all hostile to it.

Worst of all, the real history of what happened in the past under Mintoff’s reign was watered down in case it ‘offended’ the Labour Party, thus perpetuating the lies and propaganda of those days. The result is a young generation which could not protect itself with hindsight from the most manipulative, deceitful Taghna Lkoll campaign, and fell victim to it.

They’re knifing him with words of comfort all over his Facebook page – all the Labour politicos and ex candidates, wishing him well.

As if anybody called Demarco needs any more links with the Labour Party after Guido Demarco was practically in bed with them. How else did he persuade Mintoff to vote against his own party? And thank God he did – I couldn’t be more grateful for it.

It’s bad enough that Giannella’s son has married into the big, jolly Super One family – the late hairdresser Alfie Rizzo’s daughter – and her step-son is selling Maltese passports all over the globe and giving international interviews about it.

There are no boundaries in Malta. It’s disgraceful.

That’s a very bad sign. Anyone would have come out during such festivities if something is not seriously wrong.
