It’s archaic, FP. Idiomatic English does not use archaisms. I’m running out of patience here.

“I shall be revenged.”

“The avenging angel”

“Vengeance is mine, saith the Lord.”

And so on.

“He avenged the foul deed.”

This is the only legimate use of either word. Anything else is illegitimate, wrong, illegal, and a crime for native speakers, for which they should be imprisoned. Non-natives get away with a stiff fine.
