Who cares for the harm being done to the infantas? I certainly don’t. They have a very secure financial future to make up for that. The worse thing is that that the country is being bankrupted for their sake.

You can’t drop a child off at school in Mgarr at 8.30am and make it to an office in Valletta or San Gwann or wherever, parking and all, by 9am. I used to drop off my children at 8.30am and never got to my office in Ta’ Xbiex before 9.30am.

Things must have really changed a lot. The one time I got driven to primary school by my grandpa’s chauffeur (I had missed the bus, my mother doesn’t drive, my father was away, my other grandfather had left for the office already, there was a baby in the equation and my other siblings were ill but of course I wasn’t allowed to miss a school day when I wasn’t ill too), I was crucified with embarrassment, lay low on the seat in the hope that none of the children pouring into school would notice me there, and practically crawled out of the car and scuttled inside, glowing with red-hot shame. Nobody even got driven to school by their parents in those days. You either got the school bus, the public bus, or you walked. I can’t understand how today’s children are not painfully embarrassed by chauffeurs. Perhaps we live in a less, not more, egalitarian age? I can’t understand why they’re not embarrassed by their mothers making ‘loveyou’ scenes on the school steps, either. That would have been unthinkable back then.
