The following is article 16 (b) of The Prevention of Money Laundering law in Malta. Article 16 describes the functions of the FIAU, the unit in charge of investigations on suspected money laundering:

(b) to send any analytical report as is referred to in paragraph (a) to the Commissioner of Police for further investigation if having considered the report received under paragraph (a), the Unit also has reasonable grounds to suspect that the transaction or activity is suspicious and could involve money laundering or funding of terrorism or property that may have derived directly or indirectly from, or constitutes the proceeds of, criminal activity.

As can be seen from above, the unit will only send a report to the police if it has reasonable ground to suspect that activity is suspicious or the proceeds result from criminal activity, otherwise it will not submit a report to the police.

It therefore follows that if a report has been made to the police, even if the FIAU cannot tell us the conclusion of the report, we can conclude automatically that they suspect criminal activity.
