No that statement is not a fair representation of the sector and the hard work undertaken by the vast majority of its practitioners.

We represent a collective seriously committed to the development of Malta as a reputable financial services jurisdiction; this despite the competition we face internationally from larger and well established business centres.

In spite of the evident issues we face today we continue to represent and uphold the values of a serious, professional and a robustly regulated financial services regime.

Nevertheless, while the above comments are to some degree anecdotal they nevertheless reflect a worrying trend. I must stress however that they are not of the sector’s making.

I’ve said this since 2013. Maltese functioning abroad were penalised the moment Muscat came to power.

Well, a good number of the people working in the financial sector voted (knowingly) exactly for this – low standards and money laundering. They claimed, at the time, that the financial sector was so strong that nothing could happen.

This nepotism was personified by one of the directors of Finco who spoke at the MLP general election during the election campaign. They got what they deserve.
