If the wallet address is a private address generated by an individual with the wallet being stored on a wallet manager on their own personal PC there is virtually no way of tracing who owns the wallet.

If on the other hand, the wallet is stored on a website which allows people to store and manage their wallet addresses online (useful since losing access to a wallet stored on one’s own PC, say by formatting and forgetting to back it up, will result in the loss of all Bitcoin stored) then the transactions could be easily traced as extensive personal information is required to register for these sites.

You would have to be a fool to store any sizeable amount of funds in cryptocurrency for anything longer than a day or two, because the exchange rate fluctuates far too frequently, often dramatically.
