This episode might seem trivial, yet it is most telling of Mr Zammit Lewis’s character. A 16 year-old prevails upon his father to institute a civil suit, based on a claim that cannot but be dubious at best and which is eventually lost, involving a sum of Lm 250 that could, or could not be won, taken on personally at the age of 18, and insisted upon for 12 years, beggars belief.

This is so desperately embarrassing, and yet the voting public consider him a worthy candidate. At this rate we are never going to achieve any national respect abroad.

We are considered a joke: short, overweight people, pompous yet increasingly vulgar, entirely devoid of any culture, and renowned for chasing the proverbial quick buck.

The actions of those tasked with representing the face of this nation have tarnished all of us. It’s a wonder we form part of the EU. I have little doubt many northern Europeans view Malta as an island off the North African coast.
