When we were reduced to nothing, we ate muck. I don’t have any romantic or heroic memories of those times. But these people are millionaires or live like millionaires. And yet they eat (or pretend to eat, I don’t know which) muck.

What gets to me is the extensive use of canned and processed foods, grain and flour invariably loaded with preservatives and margarine, the quintessential deposit of synthetic chemicals. Then he implies the recipe is healthy or something.

The culture war starts at the food. It will include shocking vegetarians with the notion that they’re pushing a culture which will destroy arable land permanently. The latest study also reveals red meat is at its best when cows are spared the industrial corn.

Hate to be the anorak here, but his shepherd’s pie is a bastardised cottage pie. Shepherd’s pie is made with lamb. Cottage pie is made with beef.

And I never ever heard of a Chicken Cacciatore with anchovies in it. The idea of mixing such a dominating flavour as anchovies with chicken leaves me cold, so he will excuse me if I will give his recipe variation a miss.
