It seems to me it is dictated by delusions of grandeur not ecological concern, an attempt to render the momentous event of the christening memorable in history for posterity. If one is of such a disposition, one may easily be tempted to do such a thing when one sees on a daily basis other trees and plaques at San Anton Palace, some of them planted more than a century ago by members of the British royal house, the emperor of Japan and other notables.

Can never understand the fascination some people see in having marble plaques to commemorate anything from opening up some club, political or otherwise or simply planting a tree. This is such an old fashioned custom and speaks volumes of the mentality of certain otherwise ‘unknowns’.
