That isn’t my point. My point is that you can’t expect any different from somebody who was grossly out of order and campaigning for a violent party and government back then.

People should be picked for roles who are fit for them. You can’t expect people to change to suit the role. The problem with Marie Louise Coleiro being appointed head of state is no different, except in scale, from the problem with Tanya Borg Cardona being appointed head of the Broadcasting Authority.

Marie Louise Coleiro was a loyal officer of the Labour army in the 1970s and 1980s, and was even the party’s secretary-general when it was led by Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici. So for God’s sake don’t expect anything better from her.

Mario Demarco is, yes, but Busuttil most certainly is not. I think that has been made amply clear. The mistake Busuttil made, and it was a serious one which led to all this trouble, is think that the relationship with Debono was unproblematic until the St George’s Bay land valuation business cropped up. Except that it didn’t crop up, because it was on the cards all along and was the main reason Debono backed Labour in 2013. No good can come from a relationship with people like that, and when people seek out your ‘consultancy’ because of who you are, rather than because of your competence in the field – as Debono did with Demarco – you should automatically refuse their business, which isn’t business at all but a form of sought reciprocal patronage.
