It’s not sophistry. A donation is a donation and a loan is a loan. That money clearly wasn’t loaned. In fact, 70,000 euros of it came against invoices. And that doesn’t only make it a loan – it also makes it tax deductible for good old Silvio Debono.

One cannot not link the donation, the “benefactor” and Mario Demarco. All talk of it being private business is totally incorrect and such ancillary activity as this donation is another tangible confirmation of Demarco’s lack of ethical discernment. This only worsens his position.

Debono’s reaction is typical. A bit like Keith Schembri’s/the Labour Party’s farce offence at The Times post-discovery.

If the Times of Malta said that, it misquoted Silvio Debono’s press release. The fact that the money was “requested” does not mean it wasn’t donated.

You’ve got it wrong, I’m afraid. It’s a donation, not a loan. I’d be a lot happier if it really were a loan. Donations are always requested. They’re never volunteered. What are they doing on television right now? Requesting donations.
