As far as I know, when you apply for the post of director – in particular one of this nature – you have to declare any conflict of interest and any other matter which you consider might preclude you from carrying out your duties without fear or favour, and that you bind yourself to inform if anything which may do so arises in the future.

This written declaration is handed to the secretary of the “interviewing board” prior to the “interview”. (The inverted commas are intentional). Someone at the Office of the Prime Minister might be able to confirm if this procedure is still in place.
