I think there is a link between the two, big government. If there’s something Labour did not do, it was to reduce the size and competence of the state. Just look at the takeover of the courts, the erosion of every independent body, the infiltration of the press, the hegemonic discourse surrounding all that matters to the public, usually consisting of culture and its fringes set against each other.

Power has been centralised, the politics of identity, nanny state and bureacratic nightmares spread even further.

Every promise resembling devolution, transparency and the autonomy of institutions scrapped in less than a week after being elected, the moment he dismissed permanent secretaries it was clear how radical this government truly was.

And then, there’s the mystery of constitutional reform and which core concepts are at stake. Everything rendered tenuous to reinforce faith in the leader.

Woodrow Wilson and his living breathing constitution and thus government, revisited. As we wait for the next change, the next inspired decision by this government of men and not rules, laws, tradition, protocol and regulation.

It’s de facto tyranny.

Tax evasion and corruption are two separate issues. The issue with Konrad Mizzi’s Panama company and any associated bank account is not tax evasion. It’s laundering the gains from corruption.

This is by definition not so when you have a corrupt government, and as corruption increases the government is viewed as less of administrators and more of a squanderers or even thieves who benefit themselves or their friends.

So it is to be expected that as this perception (usually based on reality) takes told, people will try and evade as much tax as they are willing to risk.
