The simple fact that a man like Bannister has been at the helm of the financial services regulator for 20 years is proof in itself, if any were needed, that the Malta Financial Services Authority is not fit for purpose and that Malta must be distinctly qualified to vie for the accolade of the Panama of Europe.

In fact international money laundering with all its sordid ramifications is now one of the cornerstones of the so-called flourishing Maltese economy.

Last summer Evarist Bartolo went on a rant asking for Bannister’s resignation. In hindsight I can only assume he already knew then what became public now. I only wonder whether his rant was to protect himself from being fired due to his own ministy’s corruption scandal or whether his own ministry’s corruption became public as their way of paying him back.
