News coming out of the Council of Europe (nothing to do with the EU) adds more pieces to the jigsaw puzzle and gives the emerging picture even more clarity.

A dissident Azerbaijani diplomat has claimed that his country offered bribes to members of the parliamentary assembly of the Council of Europe to vote against reports criticising its President.

Italian deputy Luca Volonte is facing trial for money-laundering and has been accused of accepting €2.39 million in bribes from Azerbaijan in exchange for his support for the government of that country, in the Council of Europe.

A report by the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project claims that payments were channelled to him through a company with connections to Azerbaijan’s ruling family.

I suspect that Aliyev would pay much, much more for support in the EU Council of Ministers which is infinitely more powerful.
