Something similar happened in the USA on Aug. 7, 1974, when Senator. Barry Goldwater, U.S.House of Representatives Minority Leader John Rhodes and U.S. Senate Minority Leader Hugh Scott, told President Nixon (“I am no crook” and denied knowing anything about Watergate) that he faced impeachment, conviction and removal from office. Nixon asked them to kneel down with him to pray and resigned the next evening,

I sent a post (19.4.2017) about the men in grey suits, to the effect that In the UK there is the 1922 Committee of the Men in Grey Suits. They are serving MPs who act as shop stewards for Conservative backbenchers. They can call a vote of confidence in their leader’s performance. They ousted Margaret Thatcher in 1990 the very moment she was proclaiming on a hotel steps in Paris to be labouring on as Prime Minister. Do not expect anything of the sort to happen here. Not publicly anyway. Nor would the Head of Sate do for all I know.

A possible way out would be the creation of a Council of the Republic made up of retired Presidents of the Republic and a number of the most senior retired judges, to advise the sitting President on constitutional matters. The President’s hand would be all the more strengthened were s/he to be dismissed by a two-thirds majority and/or if s/he is elected by popular vote,

It’s not just the MPs. Try explaining that to most voters here in Malta. As far as they are concerned God help any MP who doesn’t toe the party line.
