The businessman was prosecuted. Minister Holland was given a privileged seat next to the magistrate. The businessman gave his evidence, supported by his son who had waited in their car outside the minister’s residence.

But since there was no receipt (the minister had allegedly dropped the envelope with the money behind the sofa), nor were third persons or cameras allowed in the room, the minister was absolved and the businessman was found guilty of slandering him.

There were no whistleblower laws at the time. Does that make any difference?

You never know whether they’re spilling the beans or fabricating those beans so that the government can spill them out at its convenience.
