Unfortunately not because it’s not an independent nation. However all other EU states occupy the presidency without all this fanfare that Malta does.

This fuss about a rotating presidency is something I cannot understand. Yesterday was your turn, today it’s mine.

Almost sixty years ago Mintoff proposed the integration of Malta with Britain, while the Nationalist Party fought for independence. If Mintoff had had his way, today Malta would be in the same situation as Gibraltar.

Just a decade ago, Alfred Sant wanted ‘partnership’ with the European Union and the Nationalist Party led by Eddie Fenech Adami fought for membership. If Sant had had his way, today Malta would not hold the Presidency of the EU.

The irony is that Muscat boasts that Malta has evolved from being a colonial outpost to holding the presidency of the EU. How very correct but it is all thanks to the Nationalists and in spite of the Labour Party’s fervent opposition.
