Pilatus Bank had employees at RegTech forum in London on Wednesday. It turned out to be a tiny conference with only about 50 people. Pilatus seemed to be there to learn about regulation.

Karen Slack was billed as their anti-money laundering officer. I spoke to her carefully, trying to find out what she knew. She has not even been to Malta and it seemed to me they have hired this nice grey-haired lady because of her ignorance, but while having the right sort of companies on her CV to fool the FCA that they have hired somebody appropriate. She was trying to learn compliance by going to conferences and gathering brochures.

I did not pick that up. It could be the case as passporting under FOE is less straightforward than under FOS.

This reminds me so much of those dubious mafia-like companies and societies that sprout like mushrooms to cover up the “mother” company where the roots of all the dirty goings on start. Chaucer’s pardoner, corrupt as he was, preached that “radix malorum est cupiditas”.

A company’s 100% owner can also be one of its directors. What you saw is not the shareholder register but the company’s key personnel. ALL the shares in Pilatus Bank plc are ultimately registered in Hasheminejad’s name.

I don’t doubt that Joseph Muscat has lied to his wife too but I don’t think she is innocent. She might not have been aware of everything but she knew about the structure and the siphoning off of commissions. Else how does one explain the transfer to her partner in NY.
