I think these are excellent questions, and absolutely essential. To ignore them is to be condemned to an endless cycle of Joseph Muskrats.

No one asked him for the proof, or demand that he expose his source. Intelligent people can make up their minds and come to rational conclusions on the basis of the available information.

If one goes through life basing decisions on cast iron proof, one’s life would be a complete disastrous mess.

Franco Debono is shocked to the core that data is being published about the Panama Papers that he is not sure was legally obtained.

The Commissioner of Police investigates the leader of the Opposition’s driver for alleged fuel theft. And his police force arrests Chris Packham on a trumped up charge.

There is not one individual in the Labour Party’s parliamentary group whose conscience is sufficiently troubled to speak out. This includes the Minister of the Economy who has no personal stance to take on anything that is affecting his brief. It is all fine by him, apparently.

Yet all appear to be quite sanguine about evidence of a corrupt conspiracy at the very top of Maltese politics, with millions in kickbacks from corrupt foreign governments and super-rich foreigners, secret accounts, tax dodging on a heroic scale, apparent destruction of evidence, and lies lies lies to the Maltese people whose money and hard work pays for the apparent enrichment of a few.

The evidence for all of these is dismissed, yet is far stronger than any evidence of wrongdoing Balzan, Debono and the Commissioner are alleging. And of course the import of the putative crimes they decry pales into insignificance against the crimes these methods have exposed, and the public interest in rooting out corruption at the very highest level and the collapse of the Maltese financial sector it may well lead to.

What makes people become so morally blind? What makes people follow the dictates of the powerful so much that they are prepared to lose their integrity?

Surely this is the most important question facing Maltese society at this time. If we are to have a future, we have to understand this.
