Alas, the bonds are as good as already placed with the investing public (or elements of it) with the issuer having invited a handful of brokerage firms to subscribe to the issue with a view to then placing these bonds with their own selected clients.

More than half of the broking community have been excluded from this process. This would not have made much of a difference, as there remains a larger investing public hungry for income irrespective of the quality of the issuer and hence the investment risks associated with it.

Yes, it is telling that most of the issue will repay the large outstanding loans to HSBC, but it does not repay all of the group’s borrowings, with the balance presumably payable to other banking institutions.

It is also notable, perhaps, that another banking institution is essentially underwriting this issue and is clearly unmoved by all of the controversy surrounding this borrower. It all comes down to the fees which, including the brokerage, will amount to some EUR1 million. Nice money when you can get it.

As they say, when you owe the bank 5,000 euros, it’s your problem. When you owe the bank 53.5 million euros, it’s their problem.

Malice and trying to grab that which is not rightfully yours, just for the sake of making money, does the opposite.

Silvio Debono must live a most unhappy and stressful life.
