And here’s the worst bit: going to lunch or dinner and having to listen to braying and idiotic Maltese say, “We live in a gem” – gem being the just-discovered word – “and no wonder all these foreigners are coming here.”

They’re coming here not to pay tax in their own countries, I say, and they spend as little time here as they possibly can. And I instantly become the least popular person at table for confounding the popular narrative of gem-like Malta’s fascinating attractions outside the 5% tax rate.

Let’s stop this canard of paying politicians more to stop them taking bribes and kickbacks. We want the sort of politicians who would never take a bribe or kickback no matter how little they are paid.

What makes politicians take bribes and kickbacks is not a low salary BUT LACK OF MORAL CHARACTER. And no amount of money is going to give them a spine and principles.

Please spare me the ‘oppressors’ bit of Maltese history. The only people who oppressed the Maltese since the 19th century were other Maltese like Mintoff, Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici and now, Joseph Muscat.
