The traffic situation is a combination of two things, the first being that there are simply too many cars (and the rate of car ownership keeps growing), and the second that the current government's travel management policies are marginally worse than the previous government's.

I know that traffic is really bad in Malta, but spending two hours to complete a short journey is not something I find surprising. In the UK I've spent an hour to travel a distance which would take all of ten minutes on foot.

If there was one distinguishing feature in Muscat's 2013 manifesto, it was the absence of capital expenditure. This was duly pointed out and promptly ignored by the media.

Jobs for everyone was also implied as being none other than multiplying recurrent expenditure when Muscat promised the GWU he would reverse the contraction of state employment. Again, pointed out and shouted down in a collective psychosis of me, me and more me. Gonzi getting most of the blame.

The power station was the quintessential example of how aggressive centralised economic planning was to become.

The spike in property prices was also the loud whisper doing the rounds, the onslaught on MEPA and reforms implemented in 2008 to cool down the speculation a signal to insiders to snatch up wherever possible and propose their particular development.

If one had to match Muscat's core economic concept with a map of the island, the crony capitalism is easily identified in the tower cranes concentrating within particular zones mostly belonging to these 'entrepreneurs'.

Ultimately, the imbalance he forced, necessary to his victory, will be his undoing. A multitude of smallish projects are much more consonant with the economic morphology of this place.

Spain and Greece beckon. One was artificial oversupply and a reliance on the illusion of an external demand, the other an overblown state outsizing everything else.

People tell me I'm pessimistic.

True enough. In any normal European country no government would have survived so many scandals.

However, Muscat has had a very comfortable majority in Parliament. He has been able to silence critics within his party (as in the case of those who openly disagreed with what Konrad Mizzi and Keith Schembri have done), or to push potential trouble makers sideways.

In Malta we have not reached the stage (thankfully) of public demonstrations that destabilise the country, and the phalanx of persons of trust, bribed with state munificence, offer some protection and can be trusted to prepare, by fair or foul means, for an electoral victory.

An early election after the Presidency of the EU Council of Ministers is out of the way and before an election budget forecast rough political weather.

Traffic congestion is much worse. I know, I see it every day.

A sign of just how bad things are happened on 2 October 2015. The entire harbour area was jam-locked with traffic. People wasted two hours and more for journeys that normally needed less than 20 minutes.
