Look at the way they insult me and nag at my heels, for instance – I’m a woman of 52 with sons in their 30s, and they’re grown men, middle-aged. But they sound like early teenagers taunting and gossiping about the girl who is beyond their reach or who said No when they asked her out. It’s really, but really weird.

I don’t know what happens in Maltese society to create this phenomenon, but it’s quite evident that lots of people, let’s say from the 1950s onwards, have been frozen in puberty.

Older generations, particularly the pre-war generations or those who were children in the war, are and were noticeably different.
