I’m afraid you’re wrong. There has been a court judgement – a ruling in an attempt to scratch some people off the electoral roll – to the effect that Maltese people may still have strong links to Malta and a direct and vested interest in how the country is run, even if they are living abroad, and so they should not be divested of their right to vote in elections here.

After that, both political parties stopped attempting to wipe people off the electoral roll on the grounds that they live away from Malta.

The Constitution predates EU membership. It is obviously not compatible with freedom of movement in the European Union.

With hundreds of Maltese in Luxembourg, it is a shame that direct flights were not laid on to this destination. I have friends in Luxemburg who tried their best to come, but as they can only get away for the weekend, decided that its impractical to make the 3 or 4 hour train trip to Brussels to come all the way over, only to leave right after duty is done, and repaeat the 10 hour in total trip – besides the expense to cart the whole family over.

It is a shame that in 2017, electronic means are not used, or at least, rather than thousands of Maltese flying here, voting can be held at certain embassies with representatives of both (all) parties present, and the votes flown out that same night to Malta.

Yes, I agree that foreigners should get the opportunity to vote eventually because they should have a route for naturalisation. Maltese people always have the option to move back home and will often have family who still live there so I think they should still have a say in how their country is run.

In reply to ACD. Everybody has the means to do it. Whether they have the will or the inclinations or the right priorities is another matter. You only have to pay for the flight. Everybody who has a vote has a registered address in Malta and doesn't need to book a hotel.

I’m taking a 4am bus and two flights to get to Malta before flying back the next day. In total I’m travelling for just over 18 hours and spending more than €300 to get to the ballot box and back. Every vote counts and I’m doing my duty.

I appreciate that not everyone has the means to do this, but our country is at stake and this is our only tool to save it.
