No. Hidma. I’m serious.

It’s one of those Maltese politicians’ words that mean fuck all. The rest of us do a “xoghol”. They are special. They do “hidma”.

What’s it suppose to mean? That the justice minister expends energy and effort? Isn’t that his job? He’s paid to do it.

So the heroic “hidma” already becomes the mundane “xoghol”.

Then we go and look at this “xoghol”, and we find that it actually consists of meeting lots of people, listening distractedly to your permanent secretary droning on about the minutiae of legal notices and bills, meeting so-called “stakeholders” (in reality, supplicants and mendicants), and giving the odd speech.

Oh and countries with 4% econonomic growth don’t talk about “jimxu ‘l quddiem”. Because they are far ahead of the pack already.

Unless Edward Scicluna is lying. Which I believe he is.
