Joseph Muscat’s attitude to his closest aides setting up secret companies in Panama reveals either utter ignorance that such structures are closely associated with money-laundering, or a direct attempt to deflect attention from this fact. It is not the attitude of a prime minister of integrity who has any respect for the international reputation to the country he leads.

Certainly not for PEPs. Panama is listed as a non reputable country according to all European financial institutions. It is definitely a no-go especially for politically exposed persons.

Since then everybody started to tease the Labour trolls on the social media, and news portals, about Egrant and they started to ask for any “proof” ; “When the appropriate time comes” was the stock reply.

Muscat keeps on harping that he is innocent of any misdeeds and will not present himself before the PANA Committee until he has been cleared and declared so by the magisterial inquiry.

He, therefore proposes to appear before the committee waving a ‘clean’ certificate in his hands. He repeated this at this morning’s press conference without batting an eyelid – but that all-telling furrow gave him away.

So far, so good – only that, as things should go, he will never get that so important clearance.

As things should not be going, however, is what Dr Busuttil has been stressing – that the inquiring magistrate has to rely on those police officers who have known what is going on for the last year and more, without lifting a finger to investigate thoroughly with a view to prosecuting the culprits.

These officers will in no way give their full assistance – knowing that, at the end of the day, they themselves will be accountable for dereliction of their duties and will, consequently, have to face justice themselves.

As things stand, therefore, the prospects of Muscat’s prosecution are not good at all.
