The politician I heard first using two or three of its lines was Margaret Thatcher just after winning an election.

In Malta Alfred Sant quoted more of it as his personal electoral manifesto, and I had to write in “The Sunday Times of Malta” to show that his short performance as prime minister contradicted the letter and the spirit of the prayer.

The prayer is one of personal humility in the service of a heavenly Lord. The person reciting it privately, and not using a loudspeaker to be heard, seeks to serve and not to be served; to help others and to promote, peace, love and justice.

In the mouth of a politician who acknowledges no spiritual Lord, since he looks on himself as the Lord, the prayer is blasphemous.
