I love the "we made mistakes but we will do better next time". It implies the "mistakes" were incidental, minor by-products, while their eye was on another ball, rather than parts of a deliberate and well thought through plan, plundering all that is essential to good governance for personal gain and avarice.

Tell us, Prime Minister, in detail exactly which mistakes you mean, exactly who made them (it is always Someone Else, though we are never told who), and exactly what you have done to discipline those responsible.

Are you referring to the kickbacks, secret contracts and secret bank accounts? Which ones exactly?

Or is it the intimidation of anyone who dares come forward with evidence of sleaze? Certainly not that woman from Bidnija, who you said yesterday is tarnishing Malta's name in the world. Or that fraudster whistle-blower, against whom the forces of hell were unleashed.

Do you mean packing the country's institutions with your men (and women) and stuffing their incompetent mouths with gold in government positions where, as far as anyone can tell, they have produced nothing but cost a king's ransom? Who of them was a mistake? Who was responsible? How have you dealt with them?

Tell us, Prime Minister, exactly what you mean. Don't be shy.

He does not know whether his chief of staff has illegal bank accounts or companies elsewhere - it is not his business, he is only the Prime Minister, and Keith Schembri is just his chief of staff. Why should he know other people's business?

For all his sophistry and massaging of the truth, his legacy will be to be remembered for centuries as the greatest sleazeball ever to have occupied the post of Malta's Prime Minister. He will be in the history books, not for any achievement, but for using the country as a money-making scheme for him and his friends.

This man has not a shred of pride.
