I attended that lecture. My recollection was one of exhilaration not outrage. At last someone was speaking up and speaking the truth rather than tiptoeing round the authoritarian rule of the time, which muzzled the press and society.

I am curious to read the text, for if I remember correctly Anthony Burgess started by quoting passages from the Bible. It was when he revealed their source that there was a collective gasp – both of outrage and delight.

Re requisitioning in Mintoff’s time: one morning, a man I knew went to this big garden he had at the edge of town only to find bulldozers clearing the soil. The authorities had decided that a new road should pass right through his garden and he was not even informed.

The report on Malta Today is even worse – it says that the house was confiscated because his lecture on pornography had “upset the Maltese Church to the point that authorities had seized his house.”

I don’t think I got to the end of that book. But Labour’s actions were not about censorship or dictatorship or authoritarianism. It was always about stealing. Never anything else.

All this chest-beating about electoral defeats is pointless until you accept that the Labour Party is about stealing, in all its forms. Having to deal with the mafia, the Italians have the experience to come up with the best description:
