Those who speak Maltese habitually speak English badly and with a heavy, often impenetrable, accent. Would you make fun of them? No. So why on earth do you make fun of those who speak Maltese with an accent that’s different to yours?

In reply to Cats. People who are quite fluent in spoken Maltese, despite being well educated, might not feel too confident speaking the language, especially around those people who have been speaking Maltese all their lives. But still they are expected to do so, and they do.

In reply to Daphne Caruana Galizia. A lot of people who are not quite fluent in spoken English, despite being well educated, might not feel too confident speaking the language, especially around those people who have been speaking English all their lives. Maybe Karol Aquilina is one of those.
