Being ‘clean’ is hardly an asset for an interim Opposition leader when the government breathes corruption. If you are clean, they will sling mud at you anyway.

And you know what, I would not mind if the interim leader becomes the permanent leader. He has charisma, he is open-minded, he is inspiring and there is nobody with his qualities.

Intelligent people have been reading the plot for the past nine years. Many of us on this blog have been warning of that Muscat’s election would have dire consequences for Maltese democracy. We have been proved right. Mr James Debono is nine years too late. But better late than never.

This ‘clean sheet’ mentality towards political victory is extremely disturbing, especially where there is zero moral governance. The message ‘we won, so we can do what ever the hell we like’, rings loud and clear to anyone with ears.

I was saying, although though it seemed ludicrous even to me at the time, before the election, that Malta was technically one plebiscite away from being run by an authoritarian regime, Turkish style.

Correct me if I am wrong, but my perception is that the only opposition right now is the free press, and they, along with EU officials seem to be continually lambasted and vilified.

Who is to stop them?

I agree. It is an extremely dangerous situation: more dangerous than it was back then, when people could see the violence and touch the corruption.

Had it been true that Muscat had swept away all opposition neither he nor his adulators would today be screaming their head off in desperate defence of what is indefensible in the eyes of the European Union.

You mean the dark 1971-1987 period. People who did not live those years seem to think that the first Mintoff legislature in 1971 was more or less ‘acceptable’ and democratic. It wasn’t.

Violence started on the very first parliamentary sitting after the election, when Opposition MPs were attacked and their cars vandalised. Nationalist Party clubs began to be ransacked and people beaten up for reading the party newspaper. And characters like Lorry Sant and Fusellu got a free hand with their corrupt business.

It is true what Joseph Muscat is saying. I voted for the Nationalist Party because I believed in it. But now the Nationalist Party seems to have vanished. It seems OK now to have a corrupt government made up of crooks. The voice of the truth gave up and it is letting the whole bunch of crooks in government get away with it. I am disappointed.
