Yes, it’s true, she isn’t a lawyer. She is only qualified as one, but she doesn’t work as one. These people are too stupid to understand the difference.

When you say that a person is a lawyer, or a doctor, or a surgeon, or an archaeologist, what you mean – if you know language and sense – is that they actually work in that field. Otherwise you say that the person has a degree in law, or medicine, or whatever and leave it at that.

It is the WORK that makes you the thing and not the university degree. I am not an archaeologist. I just have a degree in archaeology. But I work as a journalist, and so that is what I am.

This is like Frank Portelli calling himself a surgeon or a doctor. He isn’t one, because he no longer works and is in his 70s. In English, those are called ‘retired doctors’ or ‘retired surgeons’.

There are a few names there of people who I would have thought had more common sense and self-respect than to be in a WhatsApp group with Censu L-Iswed, Jesmond il-Hajta, Id-Daina, Il-Lupu, Sergio Agius and il-Mackay. Those are individuals who are best described as ta’ qattani. And a couple of them are up on serious crime charges, including Agius – money-laundering. His assets are in fact frozen.
