When I was growing up, you saw this in waterpolo, too: Sliema/Neptunes. I used to live a stone’s throw from Sliema Pitch but couldn’t swim there because I was a Neptunes supporter. Can you believe it.

‘Peritocracy’ is a portmanteau of ‘Perit Mintoff’ and ‘meritocracy’. I picked it the run-up to the 2013 elections to suggest that Joseph Muscat’s government would follow in Mintoff’s footsteps, rather than be the promised meritocracy.

As to my morals, I get them in the same way everyone else does. I pick and choose based on what my reason and understanding of the world and the human condition tell me.

Religious leaders pick and choose the morality they teach based on the society of the time, and their followers in turn pick and choose how much of that to follow. I’m just cutting out the middleman.

They’re organised. Deliar’s campaign office has a ‘secret WhatsApp group’ where they tell each other what to post, with screen shots and suggestions. Yesterday, for example, it was the Polish Solidarnosc emblem, though many of them hadn’t a clue what it was and wanted to know why it was in Polish instead of Maltese.

There’s an aspect of morality that’s particularly interesting in the situation we find ourselves in. Often one person doing the right thing exerts pressure on the vast majority who prefer to bump along with blinkers on, making immoral or at least amoral choices and not appreciating being made to think about it.

It seems to me as though those of us who think it’s imperative to focus on the ethical and to denounce the immoral/amoral, the corrupt and dishonest are being exhorted to have zero opinions and just be upbeat – i.e ‘positive’, a word I’ve come to hate with a passion ever since it was taken up by the Labour trolls.

Colonial rule has nothing to do with it. Most of the world was colonised. It doesn’t follow that most of the world can’t think.

On the contrary, colonial rule by the British was exactly what first exposed the Maltese to the novelty of rational thought.

My only regret is that I am now at an age where finding employment in another country would be very difficult. Otherwise I’d just pack up and leave.
