Incidentally, yesterday, I was reading Sweet Tooth, by Ian McEwan and here’s what I came across:

Amanda, I will help you understand Daphne’s point very easily. Forget it was Pierre, think of a man you know very well and put him in the same situation, There is no way in hell you would think of it as a “mistake” to be forgiven, and clearly it would creep you out.

I look at my husband, same age as Pierre. If I ever had to learn that he went to a prostitute for sex even when younger than 22 (so 22 really is an aggravation), I would be horrified, disgusted and find the whole thing very disturbing. Yes, even now.

I would much rather learn that he slept with a hundred women who voluntarily had sex with him, than hear than hear that he went with a prostitute, especially one so vulnerable.

A decision to pay a prostitute for sex is not a mistake but a decision. He may not go with a prostitute again (and I’ll not vouch for that), but the personality flaws that made him seek out sex with a prostitute in 2003 are the very same personality flaws that have him rooting for a crook like Delia in 2017. If you can’t see that now, you will probably be able to see it by the time you’ve been around as long as I have.

No woman who can “get a job” would ever accept Lm5 to have creepy men like Pierre Portelli stick their disgusting knob into her (all knobs are disgusting when you haven’t chosen them yourself). It is, literally, paid rape.

You may not have noticed the date – 2003 – but Malta was not yet in the European Union. No, she couldn’t have got a job. And she’s couldn’t get away from her captors, either, because she was trafficked. Perhaps you missed that bit? That police raid was the best thing that happened to her, because she was deported and got away from them like that.
