I don’t think it’s got anything to do with playing safe. The reason is that certain people are not trained from childhood to deal with these situations. They think it’s bad manners to refuse to shake hands with somebody disreputable, to refuse to greet them, or to move away when attempts are made to speak to them. It isn’t. The bad manners are entirely those of the individuals who foist themselves on others when they know they are not wanted, merely to seek their own advantage. Cornering people into having their picture taken with you is extremely bad manners, and it is not just acceptable but also desirable to put people like that in their place. It is a public service, because if their parents did not teach them how to behave, then it’s up to everyone else to do so.
