When I studied transportation, many moons ago, we learned that the first step in designing an intersection was an Origin Destination (O-D) survey.

The survey helps the project team understand travel patterns, which are then incorporated, along with projected population and employment data, in a Travel Demand Model to help predict future traffic volumes on roadways within the study area.

Without this we are just stabbing in the dark and throwing big money at a problem which will not go away.

This kind of challenge is not the job of architects. It’s the job of an army of experts in data, most of them coders and computer scientists. The architects can then be involved in the final stage when the roads and bridges need to be designed – if it ever comes to that.

Because most countries, when faced with this challenge, solved it by deploying mass transport solutions.

Helsinki found that the solution to traffic jams is to LOWER the speed limit. Counterintuitive? Yes. That’s what data science is for. Coders don’t just do igaming.

All these people grumbling about the number of cars on the streets yet none of them want to use buses because the present system is unreliable and frankly, a joke.

I myself lost a lot of money, even a job, because of public transport. Sue me for throwing my bus card in a bonfire soon as I got licensed.

The present number of cars on the street is not the problem but a massive symptom. Why are 60-80 year olds driving (rather dangerously might one add)? Because they cannot handle waiting for a whole hour should they not walk fast enough to reach the bus-stop on time. If they do reach it on time, the bus might not turn up anyway.

Buses on their own do not work and that is how you get insipid notions such as the above pictured with no thought as to what would happen beneath those flyovers.

I never drove a car while working abroad and was always punctual. Had we a decent sky train or underground system coupled with smaller buses (our roads are too narrow for these trucks) that would take you around a particular area from the station, the situation on the streets would vastly improve.
