I think we're looking at a situation where he goes up on stages and begins pouncing and growling, making loud fascist speeches, to go after the right-wing vote. And meanwhile alienates everyone else.

What irks me is this constant reference to “ahwa Maltin u Ghawdxin”. Apart from the issue I have with referring to “Ghawdxin” as if they’re some different nation, I’ve never heard Theresa May speak about “British brothers and sisters”, or anything as stupid as that.

And why should I feel any sense of kinship or affinity with someone just because they came from the same country as I?

It’s impossible to feel genuine kinship towards collective masses. You feel kinship towards individuals, because you can create a direct rapport with a person once you meet them and get to know them. It doesn’t matter if they’re Maltese, English, Dutch, Australian, Japanese, or whatever.

Daphne, I think your analysis is perfect. I always wondered whether the Nationalist Party should have rebranded and changed its name to distance itself from the darker connotations of nationalism and in so doing, get rid of the scum which (admittedly wrongly) I thought were only the party’s lunatic fringe.

We need a true Centre-Left Liberal party which upholds our freedoms, our institutions, civil society, merit. I won’t be voting again until a party and its leader show true commitment in this direction.
